So we went back to the artists behind the brilliant visuals of the demo, the Montreal studio Back to the Game B2tGame.

He was a central figure of the entire project, making sure everything fits together, adding visual effects, and getting Lost Crypt ready for the Asset Store. You can watch a recording of the webinar below:. First, a little behind the scenes about how B2tGame contributed to Lost Crypt. The B2tGame team for the project consisted of three people.

Richard Rispoli, Creative Director, defined the pipeline for the production and took care of all the lights and shaders effects. As a technical artist, he tested our newest 2D tools to their limits.

Ivano Ivan Mansueto, Technical Director, was the technical lead on their part, dealing with the repository push and pulls. Rayman Legends also has some beautiful backgrounds. Mika: I start pasting my concept in one big document. It helps me keep a consistent level of detail across all the sprites.

Then I make a list of all the different elements I will need to compose the scene. This helps me to see what must be painted, and what can be reused. After that, I start cleaning everything for integration. Try it first on some assets you know, like a sphere, for example, to make sure it works well in Unity.

Mika: Go to the Asset Store and use an existing tileset as a starting point if you can. Otherwise, I would encourage people to use some smart objects in Photoshop. Creating a tileset involves repeating some patterns a lot.Unity is equally suited to creating both 2D and 3D games.

When you create a new project in Unity, you have the choice to start in 2D or 3D mode. You may already know what you want to build, but there are a few subtle points that may affect which mode you choose. The choice between starting in 2D or 3D mode determines some settings for the Unity Editor, such as whether images are imported as textures or sprites A 2D graphic objects.

If you are used to working in 3D, Sprites are essentially just standard textures but there are special techniques for combining and managing sprite textures for efficiency and convenience during development. More info See in Glossary.

2D Game Kit

You can swap between 2D or 3D mode at any time regardless of the mode you set when you created your project see 2D and 3D Mode Settings.

Here are some guidelines which should help you choose. More info See in Glossary to make them appear as solid environments, characters and objects that make up your game world. The Camera can move in and around the Scene A Scene contains the environments and menus of your game. Think of each unique Scene file as a unique level. In each Scene, you place your environments, obstacles, and decorations, essentially designing and building your game in pieces. More info See in Glossary freely, with light and shadows cast around the world in a realistic way.

For all games that fit this description, start in 3D mode. Sometimes games use 3D geometry, but use an orthographic camera instead of perspective. The output is either drawn to the screen or captured as a texture. More info See in Glossary and Scene view An interactive view into the world you are creating.

You use the Scene View to select and position scenery, characters, cameras, lights, and all other types of Game Object. More info See in Glossary to Orthographic though. Many 2D games use flat graphics, sometimes called sprites, which have no three-dimensional geometry at all. For this type of game, you should start the editor in 2D mode. Some 2D games use 3D geometry for the environment and characters, but restrict the gameplay to two dimensions. For example, the camera may show a side-scrolling view, and the player can only move in two dimensions, but the game itself still uses 3D models for the obstacles and a 3D perspective for the camera.

For these games, the 3D effect may serve a stylistic rather than functional purpose. Although the gameplay is 2D, you are mostly manipulating 3D models to build the game, so you should start the editor in 3D mode. This is another popular style of 2D game, using 2D graphics but with a perspective camera to get a parallax scrolling effect. Scene above from One Point Six Studio. You may have plans for a project that fits one of the above descriptions, or you may have something else entirely different or unique in mind.

Whatever your plans are, hopefully the above will give you an idea of which mode to start the Editor in. Remember, you can switch modes at any time later. Whichever type of project you are working in, there are some useful pages to help you get started. These settings are optimized for 2D and 3D Projects across the full range of platforms that Unity supports.

Templates speed up the process of preparing the initial Project, a target game-type or level of visual fidelity. Unity provides a Sprite Packer utility to automate the process of generating atlases from the individual sprite textures. You use the Scene View to select and position scenery, characters, cameras, lights, and all other types of Game Object. More info See in Glossary Model 5. This template is built using the Scriptable Render Pipeline SRPa modern rendering The process of drawing graphics to the screen or to a render texture. By default, the main camera in Unity renders its view to the screen.

The Universal Render Pipeline Template configures Project settings for Projects where performance, wide platform support, and ease of customizing graphics are the primary considerations. To view the examples in an existing Unity project, please copy the contents in the Assets folder to the Assets folder of your existing project as well as the manifest. As this repository contains the scripts from 2d-extras as a package, you do not need to include the files from the 2d-extras repository to this.

This example makes use of the Physics2D collision contacts to determine which cell in the Tilemap is hit when there is a collision.

Open the scene Brick to get started. Run this example to start playing. Open the scene Destructible to get started. Run this example by playing it and click on a location to cause an explosion and watch the after-effects.

Choose the Brush you want to paint with and start painting. Pull up the Brush dropdown bar to view additional parameters for the chosen Brush. Tiles - Tile Palettes have been set up for each of the different types of Scripted Tiles. Choose the Tile Palette containing the Tile asset that you want.
